tips for turning your love of web design into a careerIf you enjoy spending time on the internet and you have an eye for web design, you could turn that love into a profitable career. Everyone needs a website, whether it’s for an entrepreneur or a large corporation. However, not everyone has the talent or time to create their own website, or even to do the upkeep on it.

Designing a website isn’t always an easy task. That means if you’re good at it people are going to want to come to you. But you need to make it a legitimate business, and here are some ways you can work toward that.

Get A Degree

Getting a degree in web design is a great start at ensuring you’re creating a marketable and trustworthy business. At some point, you might even want to teach people how to design their own sites, and then you might be interested in a higher degree through a college like Maryville University.

Having a degree isn’t a necessity when it comes to becoming a web designer, but it does give you some extra experience. It may also be more attractive to the people that might hire you. You might even learn things you didn’t know about before you started taking classes.

Design Your Portfolio

Use assignments you did in your schooling as building blocks for your professional portfolio. Help out your friends with their blog designs and websites and you can use those in your portfolio as well. Your portfolio doesn’t have to be filled with paid work, it just needs to be filled with work that will attract people that will pay you.

Your portfolio needs to give people a look at all of the work you’ll be able to do for them. Don’t try to sell something that you don’t have proof you’re experienced in doing. And make sure that your portfolio is easy to maneuver so that people can find the samples they are looking for and then get ahold of you for an estimate.

Market Yourself

You will need to do a lot of marketing to get your business up and going. Use social media to get the farthest reach. You also want to do some paid advertising, using things like Google Adwords where you just get charged when people click your ads.

Marketing online will allow you to reach people on a global level, but you may also want to consider marketing locally as well. That takes having business cards and maybe even a print brochure. Local businesses may hire you simply for the fact that you too are a local business.

If you can make money doing something you enjoy or something you love, you should go for it. Make sure you put just as much focus into your portfolio site as you do your client sites and you’ll have businesses knocking down your door.
