Mobile applications (apps) have changed the way people live, work, and play. From challenging games to money-saving technology, apps help us conduct business, communicate, and have fun anywhere, anytime. Thanks to mobile apps, everyday life is much easier and more convenient. But, how did it all begin?

As straightforward and commonplace mobile apps are these days, they have a fascinating and varied past. From the first mobile app ever to which apps are the most popular, the following list brings nine surprising facts about mobile apps you probably don’t already know:

1. The First Mobile App

Because mobile apps are just computer programs located on mobile devices, it’s hard to say which app came first. However, app development companies began creating simplistic mobile apps as far back as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and the first mobile phones. Does the game Snake ring a bell?

2. The Most Mobile Apps

It’s a close race, but Android’s Google Play Store ranks top dog with a whopping 1.6 million available apps. Apple’s iTunes runs a close second with 1.5 million.

3. The Most Revenue

Despite Android’s first-place spot as the app store with the most apps, Apple is king when it comes to mobile app revenue. In fact, in 2015, Apple took in 75 percent more from app downloads than Android.

4. Bigger Business

The mobile app industry is such a huge success, it’s bigger than Hollywood! In 2014, app developers earned more than $10 billion. This amount exceeds what Hollywood took in at the box office in that same year.

To further put this into perspective, the mobile app industry tops the list of all digitally distributed content. It does more business than movie rentals, TV programs, and other online purchases combined.

6. The Most Used Apps

It’s genuinely no surprise that Facebook wins this category. More than 76.8 percent of smartphone users download the Facebook app. Also not surprising, Facebook Messenger came in second with 62.5 percent of smartphone users. Some other most-used apps include Google Play, YouTube, and Google Maps.

7. Mobile App Limitations

Mobile apps in the Google Play Store are limited to 100MB in size. This limit is in place for two reasons. Firstly, it forces developers to create highly efficient programs. Second, it ensures users never have to wait too long for their app to download and install before they can open it.

Mobile apps in Apple’s App Store have a size limit of 4GB.

8. Fastest Growing App Categories

There’s an app for just about everything, but the fastest growing app category is personalization apps such as those for wallpapers and emoji. With a 332-percent growth, this class beats out the second-place contender (news and magazines) at 135 percent growth.

9. The Most Popular Apps

App users spend the most amount of time (43 percent) on gaming apps. Users also spend a great deal of time (26 percent) on social media apps. Conversely, the least utilized apps include lifestyle and health and fitness apps (1 percent).
