How Reliable Are Web Hosting Reviews?
Like most reviews of products or services, the review is only as good as the source that it comes from. There will be lots of websites out there that are more than happy to give their opinions on various web hosts but how credible are they?
What you should always be looking for are experts in the product or service, they should be able to display some form of credentials or they will be publishing on a well-known and well-established site. The type of sites that you are looking for are ones like the BBC, Academic sites, Technology experts etc.
How do I know whether a website is authoritative?
If you’re new to this then you might want to get a quick overview. There are lots of academic websites that give checklists and detailed explanations of what an authoritative website is and how to find one. To summarise, one of the key aspects is whether there is any evidence of bias and also to check the credibility of the website by it’s URL (does it end with .edu, .gov etc) or by independently verifying the page host via Google or similar.
There are loads of web hosting reviews out there and to save you some time, some websites feature comparison tables that helpfully pulls all the information that you need into one handy table. One thing to remember is to check for the date of publishing or the last update date, as reviews that are over a few months old are going to be inaccurate. Some web hosts can start off by performing very well but as their client base grows, they are unable to continue providing the same level of service. Whether that is in terms of customer service, or the performance of the server, you will soon realise that they are not performing to the level displayed in an old comparison table.
What are the key measures to look for in reviews?
Lets take a look at some of the key things to look for when choosing a web host:
Customer Service – If you’re just starting up your first website then you are probably going to want a fair bit of support or at least the piece of mind that there is support available if you need it. Most hosts will offer 24/7 support via multiple channels so look out for this.
Uptime – You obviously want your website to be online as much as possible, so make sure you opt for a web host that provides good Uptime figures. Lots of hosts will offer a guaranteed percentage of Uptime and the best ones will offer up to 99.99%.
Features – A lot of hosts are now offering easy to use site builders to help you get started with a professional looking site. If this is something that you want, then you should be able to find a host with this listed as one of the features. Other features that may be offered include Content Management System (WordPress, Drupal etc. optimization).
Bandwidth and Disk Space – Some hosts will offer unlimited amounts of bandwidth and disk space which will be really important if your website is going to have high volumes of traffic and large amounts of content.
