For many adults worldwide, reducing screen time each day is a challenge. Whether you use technology nonstop at work or find yourself addicted to social media, putting down your smartphone or closing your laptop after a long day can be more difficult than one might think. Reducing screen time can be challenging, but it isn’t impossible. Doing so can improve your mental and emotional health and productivity throughout the day (among countless other benefits). Here are a few easy ways to reduce your screen time.

Eat Without a Screen

If you are in the habit of watching or reading something on your computer or phone while you eat every day, you aren’t alone. Many people find it difficult to eat without having some sort of entertainment from a screen in front of them. While this might seem like a big deal, over time, it can lead to a significant increase in your daily screen time and make it difficult for you to break this habit. Try to enjoy at least one meal a day without a screen nearby, working your way up to eating all of your meals free from technology.

Leave Work at Work

The main contributor to high screen time throughout each day is checking emails, work-related messages, or content at home. Try to set boundaries with yourself, and do not check your work phone or do any work-related messaging on your computer once you are out of the office. This will not only reduce your screen time but will greatly improve your work and home life balance as well.

No Screens in Bed

Scrolling before bed or even watching a movie as you fall asleep might seem like an excellent way to occupy your mind before you get tired, but unfortunately, it is also one of the leading causes of disruption to one’s sleep and is linked to negative impacts on your physical, mental, and emotional health. Try to limit yourself to screen time up to 1 hour before bed, then leave your phone in another room overnight and leave your TV off.

Block Distracting Apps

To utilize your time online or on your phone in a productive way, try to set firm screen time limits for or block distracting apps such as social media. This way, you can still use your phone to make calls or texts, look for directions, or Google important information like the best bunion corrector, but you won’t be tempted to allow your device to become a distraction and will naturally spend less time staring at a screen.
